View500 - FAQ - Database

What type of data can I store into my View500 system?

Within View500, there is no inherent restriction upon the types of information that can be stored in the database. Data can be text, binary, video, sound, picture formats (such as GIF) - it can be as flexible as your organisation requires.

Do I need to purchase a third party Relational Database Management System to run the View500 system, or to utilise my existing information?
NO. The View500 system comes complete with its own Database system, written specifically for View500, which has been tuned for optimal performance.

Can I make mass changes to a View500 Database System?
YES. View500 encompasses a "Global Changes" facility that allows a user to make changes to fields in the whole of the Database, or a portion thereof.

Can I move whole branches of the database in a single 'drag and drop' operation?
YES. View500 allows users with the correct permission (such as database administrators) to move or rename whole branches of the directory hierarchy. This is particularly useful for corporate reorganisations or name changes.

Can I run View500 24 x 7, with no down time, even for backup?
YES. Directory backup can be performed without needing to stop the Directory Service Agent (DSA).

Is the proprietary View500 database as stable as a commercial relational database?
YES. View500 customers report excellent stability and reliable database performance. View500's database was purpose developed as an X.500 compatible database, thus avoiding the inherent problems of using a relational database with an X.500 wrapper (such as the need to map all attributes, and a multi-level client/server architecture).
