The View500 Directory Server is a highly scalable repository for
hierarchical data that enables information to be read quickly by
systems and applications across a network. The View500 product delivers
highly scalable, reliable, easy-to-manage, distributed access to
information that is compatible with the broadest range of applications
and systems (through its extensive support of the key industry standards
(X.500, XMLeD and LDAPv3). It is focused on the needs of organizations
that require always-on resilience for mission-critical applications.
A directory is simply a repository for information. It is usually
hierarchically structured in accordance with international standards
(X.500, LDAP) to facilitate information sharing, common access and
interoperability. Directories are designed to provide fast search
responses to data that is relatively static. This is differentiated
from databases that specialize in the management of data that has
a high transaction rate.
Directory services provide authentication, authorization, and access
control services; store profiles for an organization’s users,
customers, and suppliers; and store and manage credentials such
as passwords and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificates. General-purpose
directory services have replaced or augmented application specific
directory services as organizations have grown their enterprise
and ebusiness infrastructures.
View500 Directory Server is an X.500-based, LDAPv3 and XML compliant
directory that delivers highly scalable, available, easy to manage,
distributed directory services in support of a variety of value
added user management, identity management, and security applications.
This directory offering is aimed at the high end of the directory
services market, especially where mission critical applications
are deployed and require always-on resilience and support from a
robust directory service. This is in sharp contrast to the low end,
commoditized directory services offered by vendors such as Sun,
IBM, and Oracle.
Today, directories are being deployed as the foundation for security
and identity management services with user profile information being
maintained and managed by the directory and meta directory. View500
Directory Server plays a strategic role in fulfilling this user
profile management.
